Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf is a Public Tertiary Institution under the state Department of Science and Technology that started in 1990 to offer Technical Training to the Deaf Youth in Kenya.

The Institute trains Students mainly at the level of Artisan, Craft and a few in Diploma courses; resulting from the minimal number of Deaf Youth who successfully complete the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the very few who even proceed to the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Level.Picture2

Effective January 2015, the Institute moved the Department of Basic Education to the State Department of Science and technology, Directorate of TVET and assumed new status with a higher profile.

Karen technical Training Institute for the deaf has an Appointed Board of Governors whose main role includes; Determining the Organization’s Vision, Mission, Purpose and Core Values. Setting and overseeing the overall Strategy and approve significant Policies of the Organization Ensuring that the Strategy is aligned with the purpose of the Organization and legitimate interests and expectations of her Stakeholders Monitoring the Organization’s Performance and ensuring sustainability

Picture1The focus is to provide the deaf with beneficial and meaningful education and which will further empower them with the tangible and relevant “Technical Skills” for Formal or Self Employment”, and further integrate them into the mainstream society, taking into consideration their “Special needs” and potentials. Rotary Club of Karen in partnership with Davis and Shirtliff renovated a borehole to supply Fresh water. Once the borehole was renovated, we needed to supply water tot eh end users. This is possible through a Rotary Global Grant that will see water reach to the users in the Institute and the farm.
